Dr. Herbison is a Professor in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He earned his medical degree from Stritch School of Medicine of Loyola University in 1962. He completed his internship at Charity Hospital in New Orleans 1963 and residency at Bronx Municipal Hospital Center in 1966. Subsequent to his residency he held the following positions: instructor, Georgetown University Medical School (l966 to 1968), assistant professor, Temple University Health Sciences Center (1968 to 1970) and associate professor (1970 to 1976) and professor (1976 to the present) in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine of Jefferson Medical College, Thomas Jefferson University. He has been the director of clinical electrophysiology since 1970 and was the director of research for 25 years and the director of pediatric rehabilitation for 20 years. He presently teaches electromyography two and a half days a week as well as gross anatomy and kinesiology to residents.

Dr. Herbison has been the recipient of numerous honors and awards including the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Medicine Annual Walter J. Zeiter Lectureship and Distinguished Clinician Award and the American Association of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM) Distinguished Physician Award and the 2009 Lifetime Achievement Award, the highest award given by the AANEM. He has also received several Excellence in Teaching Awards and the first Gerald J, Herbison Award for Mentorship from the Graduating Residents of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University.
Dr. Herbison has appeared as a speaker at numerous professional courses and meetings nationally and internationally since 1963.

Dr. Herbison was on the Editorial Board of the Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation for more than 20 years where he served for six years as Chairperson of the Editorial Board. He also served as a member of the editorial board of Muscle and Nerve from 1983 to 1986. Dr. Herbison has published 100 peer reviewed publications, 10 textbook chapters and 135 abstracts.
